HONORS 190-A Yin&Yang: Ling&Lang
Linguistics, the systematic study of human (natural) language, lies at the crossroads of the humanities and the social sciences. Much of its appeal derives from the special combination of intuition and rigor that the analysis of language demands. Linguistics has many subfields: phonetics and phonology (the study of speech sounds); syntax (the study of how words are combined into phrases and sentences); semantics (the study of meaning); historical linguistics (the study of language change in time); and computational linguistics (the modeling of all aspects of natural language from a computational perspective). This course will provide students with an overview of the field of linguistics and help them gain a better understanding of the uses (and potential misuses) of language. (GLOBAL, INTRCUL, HONORS)
